Harford County Resident Living “Green” and Saving Money After Making Investment in Solar Energy Systems
Thirty years ago, Harford County resident JoAnn Macdonald read an article in a magazine about “America going solar in the future,” and she was intrigued. In the time since then, she thought about it, watched and wished that someday, she would be able to “go solar” herself.
In May 2010, a team from Greenspring Energy was on site at Macdonald’s Joppatowne home, making that “wish” come true, with installation of a 2.10 kilowatt photovoltaic solar system and a solar hot water heater. Together, the systems utilize energy from sunlight to generate electricity and heat, naturally reducing energy costs while also contributing to global warming in a way that is simple, efficient and sustainable.
Macdonald’s decision to invest in this total solar system is not only helping her live a “greener” life, but also saving quite a bit of money on her monthly utility bills and allowing her to take advantage of several state and county-based property tax credits.
“The savings were significant and immediate,” said Macdonald, a retired teacher who is interested in science and technology. “My utility bills in June and July of this year were half of what they were during those same months last year. I am ecstatic!”
Macdonald’s decision to utilize the services of Greenspring Energy was inspired by her stepson, a resident of Darlington, who purchased a thermal water system through the Timonium-based company and had an excellent experience. Eager to understand how solar energy could work for her home, Macdonald invited a representative from Greenspring Energy in to provide a free site evaluation and answer all of her questions. From the time they took measurements and developed a recommendation, through the installation process, Macdonald was impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of the Greenspring Energy team.
