What are SRECS?
SRECS or, solar renewable energy credits are the environmental attributes of your solar energy systems and have a monetary value based on the clean energy production of that system. Here’s how they are valued:
1 SREC = 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) or 1,000,000 W or 1 Megawatt hour (MWh)
For every SREC produced by your solar system for the 30+ year life of the system, you are can earn a recurring income stream from your solar investment while benefitting from the energy savings on utility bill.
Who Buys SRECS?
Many states have laws called Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) that require a percentage of all energy sales in that state to come from renewable sources like solar. Load Serving Entities (LSE) like utility companies are required to purchase S
RECS and their associated green power to offset the polluting brown power. If they don’t meet their RPS requirements, they are forced to pay a fine or penalty by the state called a Solar Alternative Compliance Payment (SACP).
